Hydro Jetting vs. Drain Snaking: What's the Difference?
When you need a snake and when you need something more powerful.
When a drain is clogged, professional plumbers have two primary tools to clear it: a motorized drain snake (also called a cable machine or auger) and a hydro jetting system. Both are effective, but they work differently and are suited to different types of blockages. Understanding the difference helps you know what to expect and ensures the right tool is used for your specific situation.
How Drain Snaking Works
A drain snake is a flexible steel cable with a cutting head that is fed into the pipe and rotated by a motor. The cable pushes through the blockage, breaking it apart or hooking it so it can be pulled out. The cable comes in various diameters β smaller cables for sink and tub drains, larger cables for main sewer lines.
Snaking is fast, effective for most common clogs, and relatively inexpensive. It works well for hair clogs, food blockages, paper products, and moderate root intrusion. However, snaking punches a hole through the blockage β it does not clean the pipe walls. Buildup on the pipe interior remains and can cause the clog to return.
How Hydro Jetting Works
Hydro jetting uses a high-pressure water stream β typically 3,000 to 4,000 PSI β delivered through a specialized nozzle that sprays water in multiple directions as it moves through the pipe. The pressurized water scours the full circumference of the pipe interior, removing grease, scale, mineral deposits, roots, and debris from the pipe walls.
The result is a pipe restored to near-original internal diameter, not just a channel punched through the blockage. This is why hydro jetting provides significantly longer-lasting results for recurring clogs β the buildup that causes re-clogging is removed, not just bypassed.
When to Use Which
Standard drain snaking is the right choice for straightforward, first-time clogs in household drains β a slow bathroom sink, a clogged toilet, or a one-time kitchen drain backup. It is faster and less expensive than jetting, and for simple blockages, it is all that is needed.
Hydro jetting is the better choice when clogs are recurring, when grease buildup is the primary cause, when roots have entered the sewer line, or when a camera inspection reveals heavy buildup on pipe walls. It is also the preferred method for preventive maintenance of sewer lines, particularly in homes with known root intrusion history.
Important Considerations
Hydro jetting should only be performed after a camera inspection confirms the pipe is in good enough condition to handle the pressure. In older pipes with severe corrosion, cracks, or partial collapse, the high-pressure water could cause additional damage. A reputable plumber will always inspect first and recommend jetting only when the pipe condition supports it.
For most San Carlos homeowners, a combination approach works well: snaking for routine clogs and hydro jetting as a periodic deep cleaning for sewer lines and commercial kitchen drains, guided by camera inspection findings.
